I am jealous you are going to NYC...and without me! LOL!
I wish I could remember the name of the restaurants we have eaten at in NYC over the years. I know that some of the best places for Italian were all in Little Italy. You can find some killer food there for less than $30 per person. Just have to look around.
You can also ask the concierge at the hotel. (Well, if the hotel has one...LOL!) Asking the people who work at the hotel is probably going to be your best bet.
If I may make one suggestion, though...you have to go to Serendipity 3 for their insane Frozen Hot Chocolate. It is incredible, and an experience you have to have while in NYC.
Mike: I've only been to NYC twice, both times for work so there wasn't much time to do touristy things. But as general advice, go for lunch service rather than dinner to experience places and not pay exorbitant prices.
You probably can get a memorable meal for under $30 by going to some of the famous delis, either Katz's or Carnegie -- sure they are touristy but that's part of their fame.
I doubt I will ever be able to visit those places myself so I'm going to live vicariously thru you if you go there.
There's a place for Thai food call Yum Yum (1, 2, 3 or 4), I haven't eaten there but I've heard it's good. McSorley's is a pretty cool pub, had beer there but not the food. Katz's Deli has really good sandwiches. Grimaldi's Pizzeria supposedly has some of the best pizza around.
Those are only some of the places I remember. There were more places that my friend took me to, but I didn't take pics of those places (and hence I forget).
During my last trip to NYC last october, I was invited to 2 restaurants in East midtown' Ali baba , turkish cuisine , 34 streets , between 2 nd and 3 rd av, Nice Waiter and original food even for me. Nino positano, an italian restaurant, 48 st, 2 nd av , fresh méditerraneen cuisine, the food was excellent, I recommand it. For the price i was invited but you CAN find online Nabil

Look into Lavo, La esquina, Buddakan, Calle Ocho, Babbo...these are some of my usual (more reasonably priced) spots.
To Cash: I miss your blog, I'm glad you commented so we know you are doing alright.
Oh the places you can eat at!

@ Joey: Wish you could be there too! It would be fun to meet you in person! I'll enjoy it for you and post the pics ;-)
@ fan of casey: Mike is very anti-touristy.
@ Cash: Good to hear from you! Thanks for the recommendations. All have been bookmarked on my yelp account. La Esquina, especially sounds tasty.
@ Aek: I am curious to try Grimaldis. Thanks for the other recommendations- they have also been bookmarked.
