"In a relationship"

I realized after Mike uploaded pics of our recent travels on facebook that he had changed his facebook status to "in a relationship" and I realized it never even crossed my mind. I had to do that. You know, when its done on facebook, that means it really is official, so I rushed into the settings and made it official for me to!

My inner nerd - skyscrapers

Been up since about 7:30 this morning and stumbled upon the coolest site- it is diagrams of skyscrapers in various cities around the world. I've just spent about 2 hours searching around looking at skyscrapers around the US. In my next life I want to be an architect.

My favorites include:
Fountain Place in Dallas
Albuquerque Petroleum Bldg. in Albuquerque NM
1801 California in Denver
Detroit Marriott in Detroit
Phoenix Bldg in Hartford Connecticut
BB&T Bldg Greenvile SC
AT&T Bldg Nashville - seen in person and is amazing
B of A bldg - NY
56 leonard street - NY
8 spruce street - NY
citigroup center- NY
20 times square- NY
one57- NY
4 times square - NY
Devon Energy Tower - OKC
Leadership Square North - OKC
One Santa Fe Place - San Diego
Cityplex Tower - Tulsa OK
Grand Avenue - Los Angeles

I love to go to different cities and take in the architecture/tall buildings.

And another random tidbit: skscrapers in Spanish sounds so cool. The word is rascacielos.

New Yrok Times

I was scrolling through featured articles on Yahoo.com the other night and ran across one about surprising facts about board games. Me, the trivia lover, decided to check it out. The article was by a Yahoo blogger, which blogger probably means a little less reputable source, but still, Yahoo, nonetheless, it had a glaring spelling error that bothered me. Do you see it?

Blake Shelton and his anti-gay remarks

I can't stand this guy. I can't stand his humor, personality, and this just goes to further that.

Blake Shelton's Homophobic Tweet Advocates Violence Against Gays? Star Apologizes

UPDATE II: Shelton has now formally apologized over Twitter, sending out a series of messages about the incident:

Hey y'all allow me to seriously apologize for the misunderstanding with the whole re-write on the Shania song last night...
It honestly wasn't even meant that way... I now know that their are people out there waiting to jump at everything I say on here or anywhere
But when it comes to gay/lesbian rights or just feelings... I love everybody. So go look for a real villain and leave me out of it!!!
@glaad hey I want my fans and @nbcthevoice fans to know that anti-gay and lesbian violence is unacceptable!!!!! Help me!!!! And DM me...
He sent out a number of other tweets of the same nature; click over to his Twitter to see them all.
____

UPDATE: Gay-rights advocacy group GLAAD has called on Shelton to apologize for the initial tweet; the organization sent the singer a tweet, saying, "No, @BlakeShelton - violent, anti-gay statements are not what a woman wants. Apologize now. #LGBT #gay #thevoice @NBCTheVoice"
_____

PREVIOUSLY:

For the second time in a month, Blake Shelton has made a comment seemingly derisive of gay men, with his newest remark seeming to advocate homophobia and violence against gays.

The massive country music star, and now judge on NBC's new smash hit singing competition "The Voice," sent out a tweet last night that read:

Re-writing my fav Shania Twain song.. Any man that tries Touching my behind He's gonna be a beaten, bleedin', heaving kind of guy...
Shelton, hearing comments about his perceived homophobia, later tweeted:

"Ba! Ha! Reading all my anti-gay hate tweets.... Ha! Ha! If people only knew even a little about me, my family and friends. Dumb asses..."

Then, he tried to clarify further, tweeting:

“@becchez: Please make it right! I want 2 like u again.” Ha! Ok try this. Its meant to be from a girls point of view.. Thus, "Shania Twain"
Still, it's not the first time Shelton has gotten himself in hot water. Back in April, Shelton made insensitive remarks while presenting at the Country Music Awards in an exchange with co-presenter, Reba McEntire.

Speaking of Taylor Swift, McEntire said, "She writes songs about guys who break up with her, which I don’t understand in the first place. She’s beautiful, she’s talented, she’s sweet. What in the world was Jake Gyllenhaal thinking?”

Shelton's response: “Wait a minute… He was in 'Brokeback Mountain!'”

"Brokeback Mountain," of course, is the film in which Gyllenhaal famously played a gay cowboy alongside Heath Ledger.

Random LOLs from my life

The other night at school a group of girls were talking about what hair they have lasered:
L: I wouldn't laser down there. I want hair down there so that when I am old and wrinkly I can't see the wrinkles down there.

A few moments later...

L: Have you ever seen a man want to put his ___ into a wrinkly ____?

Also on the lasering:
V: I am having a hard time sitting down today. I just got my bikini lasered.

A friend of mine posted a status on facebook:

C: Lady Gaga is the best country singer I've ever heard.

Overheard at the gym:

I am more bi than a cow- colorwise, you know?

What I'm reading online

Here's some stuff that has caught my attention over the past couple days I ran across.

China likes their wine - I'm surprised.

Now these chocolate milk recipes sound delicious. It'll surely warm you up with the vodka in it or tequila in it. These have been added to my to try list.

Discovered this while looking at Daughtry cover songs

Debunking the top/bottom issue. Interesting read, especially after recent discussions over sexuality and how people identify sexually with reader Fan of Casey.

I am on the Lindsay watch.

This airport eats guide was amusing. I had my first Sonic at the OKC airport. I have never been to Bravo in the PHX airport. I usually do the Wendys or that Mexican place in the Southwest terminal. I had some underwhelming Wolfgang Puck at Seattle's airport. And had I known about 5 Guys at the DC airport a few years ago I would have tried them. Since they are now in California I need to make a trip down to the OC to try 5 Guys. When I was down there a few weeks back I ate at a Chick-Fil-A just off the 55 and didn't realize the 5 Guys I kept seeing the OC Register's Fast Food Maven talk about was just off of the 55 at Katella. Boo. Fail.

This was a good read about Brad Paisley being everything that is wrong with country music.

My commentary on various things...

I just want to disagree with this news story. I can buy Panera being #1, but Chipotle being ranked with their super huge burritos that are greater than 1,000 calories? And McDonalds?

I never knew Apple had a patent on swear words showing up in auto correct. I ducking hate it. Not that I say that sort of shut all the time, but occasionally I say something that Apple considers inappropriate. I hate that it also autocorrects the Spanish, which this article happens to mention. 95% of the words you type into Spanish on your iphone though end up autocorrected y es malo.

I found this story interesting about the origins of the Tea Party movement.

I am glad there are some trained people who can read CAPTCHAs. I have the hardest time.

And now you're up to date.

Full post to come on my doings soon.

Google Calendar/Lesson Planning

Hi guys,

Calling all Google savvy guys!

Kind of asking some technical questions. I'm usually pretty good with technology, but I've shied away from google apps. I have however decided I wanted to give it a try.

I tried to do some searching online, but everything was hit and miss. Maybe I'm just stupid because that's always a possibility too.

Over the past couple days of student teaching I've been thinking about how I want to keep my lesson plans. I am one of those OCD, very organized people. I have decided one of the best ways to do that would probably be to use google calendar to write down my lesson plans. I have a couple questions and maybe you guys can help me out. If you can answer any of these questions it'd be greatly appreciated... Thanks!

- As much as the times off to the side annoy me I can live with that.

- Is there a way to get the description to print out on the calendar? I only seem to be able to get a grid view with a note of the event.

- How do I add attachments (handouts, worksheets, etc.) to a google calendar?
- Do I have to upload the document to google documents first?

I envision being able to tell my students to go online if they need a handout that I passed out and they need weeks later. I see me using this as a way to pull up a document I may have uploaded to the computer at work and wanted to work on at home. I see me reverting to it year after year if I am teaching the same preps and can easily pull attachments/follow what is online.

- Is there a way to get a description to show on the physical calendar without having to click on the event? Also, if you'll look in the pic below I don't like how the description for social studies looks so cluttered. Any idea? This was where I just typed into the event title section.

One thing I do know after my internet searching is that I can use iCal on my Mac and attach documents that way, set up a separate calendar that way, which would solve some of my issues. iCal easily syncs with google calendar. I kind of would like a separate iCal though for school.

The best I've found after doing some additional playing around seems to be what I was able to find in iCal. I can fill everything in the description and do attachments, and it looks mostly uncluttered.

I know I can easily ask iCal to back everything up into a PDF or something to archive it and have it in this view. I guess I'm asking does google make something/is there a way for all of my requisites to show up on a google calendar?

Thanks!
Mike

Sexuality blog to check out

Here's a relatively new blog I've been reading that you should check out. There's some nudity, so it is probably not best if you are surfing at work. With that warning, check out The Closet Professor. He's a smart guy, hence the name Closet Professor, who posts about sexuality in art, history, and coming out. I am intrigued by a lot of the stuff I have read since it deals with history, sexuality, and other topics of interest to me.

Adding my dad

I blogged a while back about my aunt in OK on facebook, and how I never added her to my friend's list. I know she is the snitch type. In the past few months however, I have been contacted by family members on my dad's side of the family- a nephew of his, a cousin of his, a cousin's daughter, another cousin's daughter, and I'll probably be receiving more add requests in the next couple of days. I've had no qualms about adding these members of my family as I don't know them and don't think even if we exchange a couple messages on facebook it will change anything.

My dad's cousin messaged me the other night asking how my dad was and how she has lost contact. Moments later they add each other on facebook. My dad was scrolling through her friend's list and then suddenly he runs across me. Mike. He says, "oh and here's Mike." I laugh and say "yep."

I thought he would add me. It seemed weird, and since the other night seems weird he hasn't. We live in the same house? What do I have to hide? Um... honestly... only the observational status message I left the other night that thanks to 3 gay friends turned into a dirty gay joke. My dad would be cool with it. He might joke about it, and probably would throw in his 2 cents about the comment. But it just seems kind of weird either of us haven't added each other.

Dear AT&T

Dear AT&T,

We have had a technician out to our house 3 times in 2 weeks to deal with our constant wireless disconnects, and I've heard it all. Your lies are getting unbearable.

Please don't tell me any of the following:
- A Mac computer will run slower on the internet than a PC
- A laptop will run "slower to much slower" on a wireless network because it is wireless
- You should have almost no reception on a laptop if you're far away from the router - they consider far away my bedroom, 30 feet from the router - I know that a router usually has a several hundred foot distance around it where you should still get some signal - Drive by wifi- hello?
- It is normal to have DSL link retrains
- There is no set amount that is considered normal when it comes to DSL link retrains
- We are not seeing any errors
- Moving the DSL equipment to another room will completely get rid of the DSL link retrains
- There is no such equipment to fix a DSL link retrain because they are normal
- There are no errors from your line coming back to the company
- We have replaced every possible piece of equipment, so there will be no problems
- We have done everything we possibly can
- Watching too many youtube videos may make your internet go down
- The DirecTV box is the culprit- the Direct TV box is not hooked up to the phone line or internet- The DirecTV box is a good 15 feet from the router- surely that's not the case
- Cell phone use will not interfere with our router
- It is not the weather day in and day out in sunny Southern California diluting our signal
- The computer monitor and tower, and printer are the electronics around the router. Those are not the culprits to our awful signal.

Thanks,

Mike
