Weekend car

I decided when I'm older I need a weekend roadtrip car. I need a little hatchback that I can throw some gear in, a suitcase, and take weekend roadtrips. This would definitely be a purchase far down the road when I am established and have my feet in the door, but a little Ford Focus/Fiesta hatchback would be fun. I can have a daily driving car like a sexy little SUV or sedan too.

Then a house with a white picket fence and 2.5 kids?

I want a Blue Chevy truck.

Think about all the costs, tax, license, insurance, maintenance, depreciation. Then factor in the time value of money and cost of living in Cali. An inexpensive second car could end up costing you a 100k in actual costs and oportunity costs. Maybe you should think about a weekend job instead of weekend trips?

Mike: Since cost might be an issue, why don't you share a weekend car with your BF? That would be reasonable especially if you are living together and since your weekend road trips would be with him. Since he already has a weekend car, maybe you replace it with one for both of you to use. Otherwise, between the two of you, you'll have have four cars (two regular and two weekend cars) and that is too many.

The Focus is a great car but also take a look at the Volkswagen Golf, especially the TDI, gobs or torque and outstanding MPG. Ford needs time to work out and refine their double-clutch transmissions on their Focus and Fiesta for a few years. Both are good choices though.

@ fan of casey: I'm not an accent fan. I'm sure when we move in together we would share cars and there would be no need. This was just a random thought I had, but a rental car could be fun every weekend too.
@ Anonymous: Upkeep... eeek.
@ JP: Thanks for the info! I know VWs have great leases and the TDI model is great on gas. Not one I'd normally consider.
